It is with deep joy and gratitude that we share with you an answer to prayer: we have once again started broadcasting in the Pashtun language in Pakistan and Afghanistan!
The Pashtun people, numbering over 60 million, are one of the largest unreached peoples in the world. Predominantly Muslim, most live in Pakistan, where they are a significant minority group. Pashtuns are the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, where the Taliban, a predominantly Pashtun movement, dominates public life. The Pashtuns have proudly resisted decades of foreign intervention and are known for their fierce opposition to the Gospel, although the number of Christians now likely number in the thousands. Foreign missionaries learning their language have experienced intense spiritual attack and report that the Pashtun homeland is one of the most spiritually oppressive places on earth.
The Pashtun homeland feels like stepping back in time, before modernization and the advent of technology. The Pashtuns are a spoken-word reliant people and audio programming aligns with how they naturally engage with truth and storytelling. Our local partner broadcasts a weekly 15-minute program that is designed for Pashtun communities in war-affected regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KPK) in Pakistan as well as in Afghanistan. The program focuses on cultural connection, emotional support, and community upliftment and aims to engage the hearts and minds of people who have long endured hardship.
Through stories, teachings, and compassionate outreach, we present the salvation message—that in Christ, there is forgiveness, peace, and a restored relationship with God
The Pashtun broadcast has been reaching between 40,000 to 50,000 listeners every month. While some responses have been mixed, or hostile, hundreds have expressed gratitude by “liking” our posts or sending responses. The ministry endeavors to connect with listeners and engage in meaningful conversation. At its core, the program also seeks to share the message of hope, healing, and eternal life found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Our partner writes, “our prayer is to gently and lovingly introduce the transforming power of the Gospel, bringing light to hearts that have been burdened by years of struggle.” We at The Tide headquarters join them in prayer and invite you to as well.
Next week we will share more with you including some of the responses we have received from this broadcast. Stay tuned!
